Voices’ Operational Premise

Good decisions are founded in empirical data. As we work with experts to identify and prioritize the many issues that impact outcomes for children, we collect data to support our policy positions.

2003 San Antonio Children’s Data Book
Published by Voices in 2003, the trend lines describing the conditions of children in San Antonio and Bexar County unfortunately remain similar today.

Children Can’t Wait: Charting the Well-Being of San Antonio Children
Produced under contract to Voices in 2002 by Dr. Robert Brischetto, this report provided the scholarly foundation for the later publication of the Data Book. It provides a more detailed examination of many more indicators of child well-being in San Antonio.

Other valuable data sources for children include:

San Antonio Metropolitan Health District Health Profiles
http://www.sanantonio.gov/health/Profiles/index.asp
These Community Health Profiles were produced using Birth & Death Records, Housing, Crime, Education and Census data.

Bexar County Community Health Collaborative Community Health Assessment
http://www.healthcollaborative.net/Assessment/AssessmentHome.html
In the spring of 2002, the Bexar County Community Health Collaborative undertook a comprehensive Community Health Assessment to evaluate the state of health in San Antonio and Bexar County and identify the specific health needs of area residents as a follow-up to the 1998 Assessment

The Center for Public Policy Priorities Texas Kids Count
http://www.cppp.org/category.php?cid=10
The Center for Public Policy Priorities is the Texas home to KIDS COUNT, a national and state-by-state effort to track the status of children in the U.S. funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. In addition to publishing annual reports, the center is the only organization in Texas that offers access to an interactive, comprehensive database of county-by-county and state data on child well-being.

This system contains state-level data for over 75 measures of child well-being, including all the measures regularly used in our popular KIDS COUNT Data Book. This easy-to-use, powerful online database allows you to generate custom reports for a geographic area (Profiles) or to compare geographic areas on a topic (Ranking, Maps, and Line Graphs).
